Arthur “Art” Maskell passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025 at the age of 94.

Born in Toronto on February 26, 1931, Arthur dedicated his life to aviation, serving in the RCAF with distinction as a fighter pilot throughout the Cold War. He flew the Harvard, Vampire, F86 Sabre, T33, and the CF104 Starfighter amongst others. His remarkable career included the RCAF leapfrogging the F86 Sabre from Canada to Germany in 1953. A personal highlight was flying on an aerobatic team that predated the Golden Hawks. He flew the Sabre, the Starfighter and the T-33 while stationed at 3 Wing in Zweibrucken, Germany and at CFB Cold Lake.

After retiring from the RCAF, he continued his flying career as a Licensing Inspector with Transport Canada, conducting flight tests in parts of Alberta, B.C., Yukon and N.W.T. His flight log books document 8778 hours of flying in his lifetime.

He was a devoted volunteer at the Royal Alberta Museum and the Alberta Aviation Museum. He played an integral role in developing and delivering the Grade 6 Aviation Science Field Trip Program, fostering a passion for aviation for countless students. Arthur remained active and continued to golf into his 90s, and maintained an impressive ability to hold a 3-minute plank well into his late 80s. He was a talented artist who loved to travel, play cribbage, and sip a dram of single malt. Most of all, he enjoyed being with people.

He is survived by his son, David Maskell (Judy); daughter, Sandra Kordyback (Daryl); grandchildren, Christopher Maskell (Melissa), Kevin Maskell (Rebecca), Jessica Wright (Devin), Patrick Kordyback, Bethany Tino; and great-grandchildren, Hailey, Silas, Brody, Harlow, Martin, Estella.

Arthur was predeceased by parents, Arthur and Joyce Maskell; wife, Hazel (nee Cosh); and wife, Frances (nee Cavanagh).

The family extends our deep gratitude to the staff and residents at Venvi River Ridge, Dr. Barbara Fischer, and the staff of Sturgeon General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alberta Aviation Museum (albertaaviationmuseum.com) would be appreciated.

A social gathering to celebrate Art’s life will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025 from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at St. Albert Legion Branch #271, 6 Tache Street, St. Albert.
